Matthew Jones enjoys a varied career as a leading violist/violinist and musicians’ health consultant, offering a unique combination of training and experience. In addition to being Professor of Viola at Trinity Laban (London), he is a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique and Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, and a Performance Wellness Trainer from the New York-based ‘Musicians’ Wellness Inc.’. Matthew’s clients include world-renowned conductors and soloists, world champion athletes, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the European Union Youth Orchestra. In his parallel performing career as a soloist and chamber musician he has performed in recent years in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall, and recorded eleven CDs for labels including Naxos and Deux-Elles. He was also a member of the Badke Quartet when they won the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and is a member of Ensemble MidtVest, an innovative chamber ensemble based in Denmark.
Matthew’s interest in performance health stemmed from a career-threatening overuse injury which came to a head during his postgraduate studies. After postponing his studies he began to explore many avenues for recovery and to prevent recurrence of the injury. This journey of exploration led to teacher-training in Alexander Technique, yoga/meditation and performance wellness, in addition to experience and study of methods such as acupuncture, physiotherapy, massage, osteopathy, autogenic training, reflexology and neuro-linguistic programming.
Born in Swansea, Wales, and now based in London, Matthew now divides his time between performing/recording, teaching violin/viola and chamber music and presenting seminars on performance health and enhancement, the Alexander Technique and yoga and their applications for musicians.
